Understanding your Total T4 results

The Total T4 test measures the entire amount of thyroxine hormone circulating in your bloodstream. This includes both the hormone stored on carrier proteins and the active portion available to your body.

What is the normal Total T4 range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
International
5.0–12.0 µg/dL (adults)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does a high Total T4 result mean?

A higher Total T4 can mean there is more thyroid hormone in your blood than usual. Some people feel warm, anxious, or notice weight loss. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Total T4 result mean?

A lower Total T4 can mean your thyroid is making less hormone than usual. This sometimes goes with tiredness, feeling cold, or dry skin. Your doctor can explain what it means for you.

What affects your Total T4 result?
