Understanding your Hematocrit (PCV) results

A hematocrit test, also known as a PCV test, measures the proportion of your blood made up of red blood cells. It shows how much space these oxygen-carrying cells take up compared to the liquid part of your blood.

What is the normal Hematocrit (PCV) range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
International
Men: 41–53%; Women: 36–46%

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does a high Hematocrit (PCV) result mean?

A higher-than-usual level can mean you are dehydrated or have more red cells than usual. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Hematocrit (PCV) result mean?

A lower-than-usual level may point to anaemia, blood loss, or too much fluid in the body. When it is low, you may feel tired or short of breath.

What affects your Hematocrit (PCV) result?

Daily hydration levels, recent fluid loss, pregnancy, altitude, and temporary illness can all shift this result.

  • Sex and age
  • Bone marrow function
  • Nutrition
