Understanding your HbA1c results

The HbA1c test measures the amount of sugar attached to your red blood cells over the past few months. It provides an overview of your general blood sugar balance rather than a single day's reading.

What is the normal HbA1c range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
International
<5.7% (normal); 5.7–6.4% (prediabetes); ≥6.5% (consistent with diabetes diagnosis, ADA)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

Source: [ADA, 2024]

The range printed on a report is usually the reference for people without diabetes [ADA, 2024]. For someone already living with diabetes, the doctor sets an individual target, which is often different [ADA, 2024; RSSDI, 2022]. The ADA notes that targets are individualised by age, other health conditions, and how long someone has had diabetes [ADA, 2024]. Your doctor sets the target that is right for you.

What does a high HbA1c result mean?

A higher HbA1c can mean your average blood sugar has been raised over recent months. Lower values are generally the goal here. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low HbA1c result mean?

A lower HbA1c usually reflects lower average blood sugar. Very low values can also point to conditions that shorten how long red cells live. Your doctor can explain what it means for you.

What affects your HbA1c result?

Conditions affecting red blood cells, such as certain anemias, recent blood loss, or pregnancy, can influence this result.

  • red blood cell lifespan
  • unusual haemoglobin types
  • iron-deficiency anaemia (low iron)
  • some medicines
  • the lab method
