Uric Acid — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

Uric acid is a waste product your kidneys clear, which can build up and affect your joints or kidneys.

Uric Acid tracks a byproduct that is normally carried away without fuss. Watching it matters because a build-up can settle where you would rather it did not.

Also known as: Serum Uric Acid, SUA, Urate, Hyperuricemia marker

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is Uric Acid?

This forms when the body breaks down purines, building blocks found in some foods and in dying cells. The kidneys filter most of it out, and any excess can form sharp crystals.

Why is Uric Acid tested?

You have this test to look for a raised uric acid level, which can go with joint or kidney trouble.

What is a normal Uric Acid range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
3.5–7.2 mg/dL (males); 2.6–6.0 mg/dL (females)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your Uric Acid value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high Uric Acid result mean?

A high level can mean your kidneys clear less uric acid, or you take in more purines, or more cells are breaking down. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Uric Acid result mean?

A very low level is uncommon and can go with certain enzyme differences.

What can affect your Uric Acid result?

  • Purine-rich foods (red meat, shellfish)
  • Kidney clearing
  • Body weight
  • Some medicines (water pills)
  • Sex and age

Questions to ask your doctor

About this result

  • What does my Uric Acid result mean for me specifically, given my age and health?
  • Is my Uric Acid in the range that is right for me, not just the lab's general range?
