TSH — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

TSH is the brain's signal that tells your thyroid gland how much hormone to make.

Think of TSH as the message your brain sends to keep your thyroid ticking along. Doctors read it as a quick gauge of whether that gland is pulling its weight.

Also known as: Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, Thyrotropin, TSH level, serum TSH

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is TSH?

The pituitary, a pea-sized gland under your brain, releases this hormone to drive thyroid output. When thyroid hormone in your blood drops, the pituitary sends more of it to push the gland harder.

Why is TSH tested?

This test checks how well your thyroid is working, and helps track people already on thyroid hormone medicine.

What is a normal TSH range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
0.4–4.0 mIU/L (adults)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

Source: [ATA, 2014]

The printed range is a general adult reference [ATA, 2012]. The upper limit can shift with age, and in pregnancy it differs by trimester [ATA, 2012]. Which range applies depends on your age and situation. Your doctor sets the range that is right for you.

What does your TSH value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high TSH result mean?

A higher TSH often means your thyroid is working slower than usual. Some people notice tiredness, feeling cold, or gradual weight gain. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low TSH result mean?

A lower TSH often means your thyroid is more active than usual. This can go with a fast heartbeat, feeling warm, or weight loss. Your doctor can explain what it means for you.

What can affect your TSH result?

  • age
  • pregnancy
  • time of day the sample is taken
  • some medicines
  • a recent illness
