MCHC — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

This shows how tightly packed with oxygen-carrying protein your red blood cells are.

MCHC offers you a sense of how richly your red cells are filled with their oxygen-moving substance. Your doctor reads it as one orienting clue among several when interpreting your blood picture.

Also known as: Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration, Mean Cell Hemoglobin Concentration

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is MCHC?

MCHC compares the hemoglobin to the space available inside your red cells. It gauges how concentrated that oxygen-ferrying protein is, rather than the total amount per cell.

Why is MCHC tested?

Your doctor checks it to see how densely hemoglobin fills your red cells. This helps them make sense of certain types of anaemia.

What is a normal MCHC range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
32–36 g/dL

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your MCHC value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high MCHC result mean?

A higher-than-usual value can be seen in some inherited red cell conditions or with strong dehydration. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low MCHC result mean?

A lower-than-usual value can be linked to low iron or a thalassemia trait. It means the cells are less densely filled with hemoglobin.

What can affect your MCHC result?

  • Iron levels
  • Red cell membrane conditions
  • Hydration
  • Thalassemia trait
  • Ongoing blood loss

Questions to ask your doctor

About this result

  • What does my MCHC result mean for me specifically, given my age and health?
  • Is my MCHC in the range that is right for me, not just the lab's general range?
