Epithelial Cells — What It Means in Your Urine Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

This looks at lining cells that shed into your urine, which often just reflect how the sample was collected.

Epithelial Cells are the everyday lining flakes that drift into your sample. Often their presence says more about how the specimen was gathered than anything happening inside you, so context matters here.

Also known as: Squamous epithelial cells (urine), Transitional cells (urine), Renal tubular epithelial cells, EC (urinalysis)

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is Epithelial Cells?

Epithelial cells are lining cells shed from your urinary tract or skin into the sample. The lab sorts them by type under the microscope.

Why is Epithelial Cells tested?

It is checked as part of routine microscopy. Many surface cells usually mean skin-cell mixing, while deeper lining cells can reflect the bladder or kidney tubes.

What is a normal Epithelial Cells range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
Squamous: few (up to 5 per HPF acceptable; higher suggests contamination); Transitional: 0–2 per HPF; Renal tubular: rare/none

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your Epithelial Cells value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high Epithelial Cells result mean?

Many surface (skin) cells usually mean the sample got mixed with skin cells, so it may need repeating with better technique. Raised deeper lining cells can reflect the bladder or kidney tubes.

What does a low Epithelial Cells result mean?

A low count is expected and is no cause for concern. A sample with no such cells at all is also normal.

What can affect your Epithelial Cells result?

  • A clean mid-stream sample
  • More common in women
  • Collection method
  • Timing and hygiene
  • Recent urinary procedures
