ANA — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

This is a test for antibodies that act against parts of your own cells.

An ANA result offers a wide first look at whether your immune system may be reacting against your own tissues. See it as an opening clue, not a conclusion. Your doctor reads it in full context.

Also known as: antinuclear antibody, antinuclear antibodies, FANA, fluorescent ANA, anti-nuclear factor, ANF

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is ANA?

ANA are antibodies that target parts inside the cell nucleus. Their presence and staining pattern can hint at the kind of autoimmune process.

Why is ANA tested?

You may have this test as a broad first check for body-wide autoimmune conditions. It is used when signs suggest connective tissue disease.

What is a normal ANA range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
Negative: <1:40 titer; low positive: 1:40–1:80; significant positive: ≥1:160 (HEp-2 cell substrate, indirect immunofluorescence; laboratory-specific cut-offs apply)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your ANA value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high ANA result mean?

A positive ANA at a meaningful level, with a certain staining pattern, raises the chance of a body-wide autoimmune condition. It calls for more specific tests.

What does a low ANA result mean?

A negative ANA makes many body-wide autoimmune connective tissue diseases less likely. Rare exceptions depend on the clinical picture.

What can affect your ANA result?

  • Low-level ANA can be found in healthy people and becomes more common with age
  • Some medicines, such as hydralazine and procainamide, can bring on a positive ANA
  • The staining pattern guides which specific antibody tests come next
  • The lab method strongly shifts how sensitive and specific the result is
  • A positive ANA must be read within the clinical picture; it does not stand alone

In the Indian context

Lupus and other connective tissue diseases are being recognised more in Indian populations. ANA testing is now available at most larger Indian labs.

Questions to ask your doctor

About this result

  • What does my ANA result mean for me specifically, given my age and health?
  • Is my ANA in the range that is right for me, not just the lab's general range?
